Friendship, Family, Love

"As we strain to grasp the things we desire, the things we think will make our lives better: money, popularity, fame… we ignore what truly matters, the simple things, like friendship, family, love. The things we probably already had."

My Bi-Monthly Opinion: Couch Potatoes and Cot Potatoes

Rating: zero

Couch Potato: A person who spends a lot of time sitting in front of the television
Cot Potato: A very young child who spends a lot of time watching television (cot = a baby's bed)

It has been proven that those who are couch potatoes have a higher risk of becoming overweight or obese. Also, according to CBN.com, those who sit for more than 11 hours a day are 40% more likely to die in the next three years than those who are active.

According to the CDC (center for disease control), 10.4% of children age 2-5 are obese, as are nearly 20% of kids ages 6-19 and 33.9% of adults older than 20. America has a weight issue, and a huge part of this obesity problem is due to television and not being active.

I have witnessed first hand a child who was 3 years old and could hardly talk because his mother let the television "babysit" him. Also, it is proven that the children who watch violent television programs are more likely to become violent and abusive adults.

...as for my opinion...

People should try to eat healthier, even when watching television or playing video games. (ex. celery instead of popcorn)

I believe that both adults and children should entertain themselves in ways that are more active such as going on a bike ride, run, or walk, playing sports, or if disabled, exercising the mind through reading books.

If you have time to watch hours and hours of television, you have time to go outdoors, read a book, or go to work and make some money.

...you can even eat the book...

...or eat the "outdoors"..

Two Faces

“No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true.”

How should we think? How should we act?

It seems to me that if you or I must choose between two courses of thought or action, we should remember our dying and try so to live that our death brings no pleasure on the world.

Chivalry: Dead?

Chivalry is: "The ideal qualifications of a knight, including: courtesy, generosity, valor, and deftness in arms."

Now a-days, people view chivalry as: a man opening the car door, holding open a door, letting the woman walk in front, carrying a girl's books, ect.

But chivalry is more than that... according to the "Code of Chivalry," it is: speaking the truth, when you were tempted to tell a lie; helping another when you were tempted to disregard them; giving something to those in need, when you were tempted to leave them sitting on the street; and keeping quiet when you were tempted to brag.

Chivalry is important, whether it is a guy opening a door for a lady, or telling the truth instead of a lie. I do not believe that chivalry is completely dead. It may be dead in many people, but there are people out there who continue to embrace chivalry.

Although it is important that both men and women strive to be chivalrous, I believe it is important for the ladies to take the spotlight off the men and stop nagging them about being chivalrous.

It seems that women, wanting to do everything themselves, are the ones who have put a choke hold on chivalry...and to be quite honest, if chivalry was dead, I feel as if it would be the women's fault.

So ladies, if you want men to open doors for you, or carry your books, let them... It will make them feel as if they helped you out (even if you didn't want it), and cause them to try to be more chivalrous...which is the ultimate goal.

...be chivalrous and share this post with your friends...
